Practical Transition Strategies for Toy Brands

Transitioning to sustainable packaging is most effective when approached systematically rather than reactively. Here is a practical framework for educational toy brands:

Step 1: Packaging Audit Conduct a comprehensive audit of your current packaging portfolio, documenting: materials used in each packaging component, current recyclability status, recycled content percentages, FSC certification status, and compliance gaps relative to PPWR requirements.

Step 2: Prioritization Prioritize packaging changes based on: regulatory timeline (address 2025 requirements before 2030 requirements), commercial impact (prioritize packaging for your highest-volume EU SKUs), and ease of transition (start with changes that require minimal redesign investment).

Step 3: Supplier Engagement Engage your packaging suppliers early in the transition process. Request: FSC chain of custody certification (or timeline for obtaining it), recycled content options for plastic components, and recyclability assessments for current packaging designs. Suppliers with strong sustainability credentials will be better partners for the long-term transition.

Step 4: Design for Sustainability Work with your packaging designer to develop packaging that meets both sustainability requirements and brand objectives.
